Asylum Welcome has been nominated by Oxford Mail/Oxford Times readers in Cash For Charities and has been selected as one of the charities to benefit from a share of £20,000 and we need your vote!
During November the details of all eight nominated charities will be published in local newspapers and readers will be encouraged to “vote” for their favourite charity by collecting special tokens which will be published in the newspapers.
Tokens will appear from 1st November and will run for 4 weeks. These tokens can be inserted into one of the special Cash For Charities collection boxes that can be found in Asylum Welcome’s office, local supermarkets, newsagents and other prominent locations throughout Oxfordshire or sent directly to: Readers’ Choice Cash For Charity Votes, Redhill House, 227 London Road, Worcester WR5 2JG.
In addition to Asylum Welcome’s collection point, other collection points are:
- The Mid-Counties Co-op, Old Marston Road, Oxford OX3 0JR
- Waitrose, Old High Street, Headington, Oxford OX3 9HP
- Woodfarm Post Office, Atkyns Road, Headington, Oxford OX3 8RA
- Sainsburys, Templars Square Retail Park, Oxford OX4 3JP
- Marks & Spencers, Oxford Retail Park, Cowley, Oxford OX4 6XJ
- Martins McColls, Balfour Road, Blackbird Leys, Oxford OX4 6AG
- Court Candy shop, Woodstock road, Oxford, OX2 6HJ
Asylum Welcome will receive a share of the £20,000 cash fund based on our share of the total number of tokens collected by our supporters – so if we receive 50% of all the tokens collected by all of the participating charities, then we will receive £10,000. The more tokens in support of Asylum Welcome, the bigger its share!!
We are seeking funding to support the new Afghan arrivals. These individuals, children and families are in local transition hotels, awaiting long-term housing. They have faced unimaginable trauma and need support to settle and move forward. At present, what we need most is funds to allow us to offer transport to guests where needed, cover extra staffing, organise language training and materials for women, men and their children, and help ensure that all families have some access to phones, internet and transport costs, activities and outings. We are also seeking funding for our hardship fund, assisting people without refugee status who are not entitled to public benefits. We give these hardship grants to enable our most disadvantaged clients to buy food, medicine, and essentials to support themselves and their families on a weekly basis.
Thank you so much for all your wonderful support to Asylum Welcome!
Note: The £20,000 cash is being provided by The Gannett Foundation, the charitable arm of Gannett Co, Inc., owner of Newsquest Media Group, which publishes regional and local newspapers, websites and magazines across the UK. The Gannett Foundation provides funding to support local projects and organisations in areas where Newsquest operates. The funds are managed by the Hearts of Bucks-Community Foundation for Buckinghamshire.
